The Hungarian motorway network provides fast and convenient transportation across different parts of the country and connects to neighboring countries. In Hungary, motorways are indicated by the letter "M" and numbers. Hungarian motorways connect major cities, including the capital, with other significant towns and border crossings.

Hungarian highway vignette: where to buy?

There are no toll booths or barriers in Hungary, so you can freely drive onto the highways. Signboards indicate the toll payment obligation. In Hungary, there are no motorway sections subject to separate section tolls; therefore, all sections are included in the base fee of the highway vignette. For travel on motorways, vehicles must purchase an official highway vignette. The official highway vignette is time-based, meaning its validity changes according to the selected period (e.g., weekly, monthly, or annual).

The official Hungarian highway vignette must be purchased before entering the motorway. Buying the highway vignette afterward can lead to disadvantages, as strict checks on the motorways result in fines for traveling without an official highway vignette.

After purchase, the highway vignette becomes valid within minutes. This type of toll is also known as an e-highway vignette (or digital, electronic highway vignette) among vehicle owners. It is the most modern, fastest, and most convenient way to buy a highway vignette. Consequently, very few people use the adhesive vignette, and it is becoming harder to find places that sell it.

In Hungary, not only national but also regional highway vignettes are available, divided by the country's counties. The highway vignette in Hungary is also referred to as toll, road tax, toll road, or toll roads. The management and operation of the Hungarian toll payment systems are the responsibility of the National Toll Payment Services Plc., and it can also be purchased through the partners of the National Mobile Payment Plc.
